Dan Turrentine is an American political operative, public policy expert, lobbyist, and talk show host. He was born to a pre-k teacher and lawyer in Washington and attended Fairfield College Preparatory School. He graduated Lafayette College in 2000.

Turrentine has worked in various political roles, most notably as the National Financial Director for HILLPAC, a political action committee for Hillary Clinton from 2004 to 2006. He also served as Chief of Staff for Congressman Jared Polis (CO-02) from 2014 to 2015. He has also been involved in lobbying, serving as Vice President and Chief Government Relations Officer at H&R Block from 2017 to 2021.

Turrentine was Vice President of Government Relations at Technet from 2010 to 2014. He also founded the Churchill Road Group, a political and fundraising consulting company.

Early Life and Education

Daniel Calhoon Turrentine was born on September 21, 1977 to JoAnn B. Turrentine and J. Drake Turrentine of Washington. His mother was a prekindergaten teacher who became a floral designer after retirement and his father, a lawyer, once served as the chief legal officer and secretary of the board of Special Olympics Inc. in Washington.

Turrentine attended Fairfield Prep from 1994 to 1996 before pursuing higher education at Lafayette College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 2000.

Career

Turrentine’s early career involved roles in finance and fundraising. He served as a Finance Assistant for Mark Kennedy Shriver for Congress from September 2001 to September 2002. Following this, he was the Regional Finance Director for the Democratic National Committee from 2002 to 2004 and the National Finance Director for Friends of Hillary Clinton & HILLPAC from 2004 to 2006.

Churchill Road Group

In 2007, Turrentine founded the Churchill Road Group, a political and fundraising consulting company. As President, he consulted for U.S. Senators, Governors, federal campaign committees, and think tanks until 2010.

TechNet

From 2010 to 2014, Turrentine served as Vice President of Government Relations at TechNet. In this role, he was responsible for the trade association’s public policy, working with member companies to establish policy positions and draft advocacy plans. His responsibilities included organizing CEO fly-ins, writing policy white papers, and facilitating meetings with legislative and executive branch leaders. He also co-chaired lobbying efforts for campaigns such as WIN America and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Free Trade Agreement coalition.

In 2014, Turrentine became the Chief of Staff for Congressman Jared Polis (CO-02), managing a staff of 22 people. His responsibilities included developing a plan for Polis to run for Congressional leadership, strengthening relationships with colleagues and constituencies, increasing the Congressman’s profile, and developing legislative strategies.

Turrentine joined H&R Block in 2015 as Director of Government Relations. He was responsible for relations with Senate and House Democrats, working with the Government Relations team and company leadership to develop and implement federal public policy. He managed relationships with external Democratic consulting firms, the company’s grassroots and political action committee, and worked with Democratic third parties to enhance the company’s brand. 

From May 2017 to June 2021, he served as Vice President & Chief Government Relations Officer. In this role, he reported to the General Counsel and worked with the CEO, Senior Leadership Team, and Board of Directors to manage federal and state public policy. He managed an internal team, lobbying consultants, a public relations firm, trade associations, and stakeholder groups, focusing on issues such as tax, financial services, and consumer privacy.

Currently, Dan Turrentine is a co-host of “The Morning Meeting” on 2WAY TV alongside Mark Halperin and Sean Spicer.

Dan married Colleen Marie McCarthy on November 18th, 2006, in Washington D.C. McCarthy was a former deputy national finance director for Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico. They have four children together (all boys).Turrentine resides in New York City alongside his wife and kids.
