Gina LaPlaca is an American lawyer and politician who has been serving as the the mayor of Lumberton Township, New Jersey since 2022. She is a member of the Democratic Party. LaPlaca was elected to the township committee in 2020 and re-elected in 2023. 

LaPlaca has a long history in New Jersey politics, serving as the Deputy Budget Director/Associate General Counsel for the New Jersey General Assembly Majority Office from 2006-2008. She previously worked as the Deputy Counsel for the Office of Legislative Services from 2004-2006 before a stint in the private sector.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Political Science & Communication from the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 2001. She completed her juris doctor degree at the Fordham University School of Law, graduating in 2004.

Recently, LaPlaca faced legal issues after being arrested on March 17, 2025, for allegedly driving under the influence (DUI) on St Patrick’s Day with her two-year-old son in the car. Bodycam footage released by the Lumberton Police Department shows her staggering and admitting to drinking vodka before picking up her child from daycare. She was charged with DUI, reckless driving, child endangerment, and other related offenses. Her husband has stated that she is seeking treatment for addiction. LaPlaca is scheduled to appear in court on April 28, 2025.

Her arrest has led to calls for her resignation as mayor.

Gina LapLaca was born on June 30, 1979 in New York City. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2001 with a BA in Communication and Political Science. LaPlaca proceeded to the Fordham University School of Law for her law degree.

Career

Early Career

LaPlaca’s professional career spans both the public and private sectors. She began her career holding positions in the New Jersey General Assembly Majority Office.

She was Deputy Counsel for the Office of Legislative Services from 2004-2006 and from 2006-2008 was the Deputy Budget Director/Associate General Counsel for the New Jersey General Assembly Majority Office.

LaPlaca moved to the private sector in 2008, serving as the director of State Government Affairs for Verizon until 2018. She also briefly served as a regional director at Anheuser-Busch. 

Entry into Politics

LaPlaca’s entry into local politics began when she was elected to the Lumberton Township Committee in 2020. She was subsequently chosen to serve as mayor for a one-year term in 2022 and was re-elected for the following two years. Her tenure as mayor has been marked by her leadership of the Lumberton Democrats, where she serves as chairperson.

She was also appointed as the assistant business administrator for Neptune Township in November 2021 and was promoted to business administrator in January 2022. However, she resigned from this position on March 10, 2025, citing a “changing political landscape”. Her resignation was reportedly prompted by local officials’ threats to terminate her employment if she did not leave voluntarily.

Controversies

LaPlaca’s career has been marred by several controversies, the most recent being her arrest on St. Patrick’s Day in 2025 for driving under the influence while transporting her toddler from daycare. This incident led to charges of DUI, reckless driving, and endangering the welfare of a child. The arrest was followed by calls for her resignation from both residents and members of the Lumberton Township Committee.

In addition to the DUI arrest, LaPlaca has faced previous legal issues. In 2023, she was arrested for assaulting her husband, Jason Carty, although the charges were later dropped after Carty accepted responsibility. He revealed that LaPlaca was a ‘domestic violence survivor’, having had an abusive boyfriend in college.
